He suggested the lines were runways for alien spacecraft, given their enormous scale and precision.
While there’s no scientific basis for this claim, the theory captured public imagination and made the Nazca Lines world-famous.
Modern Science and Discovery
Advancements in satellite imaging and drone technology have allowed archaeologists to discover new lines and figures—some hidden for centuries.
In 2019, researchers found 143 previously unknown geoglyphs, including human-like figures and new animal shapes.
These findings suggest the Nazca culture was even more complex than once thought.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site
Today, the Nazca Lines are protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, visited by thousands each year. Yet the site remains fragile—threatened by erosion, human activity, and climate change.
